A 12-year-old is Pregnant. What Should We Be Doing About This?

June 16th, 2009 · 3 Comments

A 12-year-old girl is pregnant and we are calling for Department of Community Services (DoCS) blood.

A father is left wondering how this could have happened when he had alerted DoCS to the fact that his former partner was allowing his then 11-year-old daughter to share a bed with her 15-year-old boyfriend.

We clearly need someone to blame. What are the options?
1. An overstretched government department that claims this ‘case’ was not a priority.
2. A clearly unfit to parent mother. What the hell was she thinking?
3. The parents of the 15-year-old boy. Weren’t they concerned that their son was sleeping with a much younger girl, who is still technically a child?
4. The law? The legal positon in Victoria is that a child aged between 10 and 15 cannot be engaged in sexual activity with another minor with more than two years difference in age. In NSW, where this potential offence occurred, Lawlink states that: “If both parties are under the age of consent (ie under 16 years), they can still be charged with an offence, however this is not likely unless there is a significant difference in age”.

In my view there is a significant difference in age on so many levels (emotionally, physically, socially), which means that every one of those options listed above is to blame.

This is a tragedy for the child and teenager involved. It could seriously damage them emotionally and psychologically if they are not treated carefully from this juncture on.

Let’s try to resist making media monkeys out of them and focus on the adults involved who allowed this to happen.

And for god’s sake, someone give that mother a course in parenting.

I am horrified by this story but wonder if the dad is as innocent as he seems in this

Who in their right mind lets their 11 year old have a boyfriend, much less one that sleeps over. Really?! Not only does this child and her child suffer, but so does society as a whole. I don’t understand how some parents are so irresponsible.
